Wednesday. August 29 1996 - North Shore News - 5 IEFS Passenger service halted indefinitely NORTH VANCOUVER-based BC Rail will continue to keep its passenger rail service sidelined, despite assurances by the Seton Lake Indian Band that it will not set up any more blockades along the Crown corporation’s maintine track. Last week BC Rail announced the cancellation of all passenger service, except for the Royal Hudson, and that freight train ser- vice will be confined to daylight hours only. The announcement came zfter an army of RCMP officers, us- ing clubs and dogs, took Gown a blockade of BC Rail’s mainline track at Seton Portage. The blockade was set up by several dif- ferent Indian bands. Seton Lake Indian Band Chief Rod Louie said no further blockades will be set up by his band members. But BC Rail spokesman Barrie Wall, while saying he was glad to hear the Seton Lake Band has decided to halt further: blockades, said the company will only resume passenger service once it is sure no other Indian bands will set up blockades. “We're very pleased Chief Louic has given that undertaking, but there were several other bands involved in setting up blockades, like the Pavilion Band, the Fountain Band, the Mount Currie Band and the Penticton Band,"’ Wall said Tuesday. **We need to have assurances from those other bands. A fire department spokesman said a ship docked at the wheat pool was being ioaded with alfalfa pelicts and a tractor was being used to level out the load when the tractor caught fire due to an electrical problem. The operator jumped off the burning tractor and the fire department was called. A fire crew, which had to take its truck onto the pier, doused the blaze using special chemical foam. A minimal amount of damage was done to the cargo, although the tractor was fully engulfed in flames. The tractor was worth an estimated $120,000. ~ Evervone watts until ater Labour Dav Weekend to get started or get back to thetr fitness program. - September is the time Health Clubs raise their Membership rates. - We have the best senice on the North shore with every: thing you need tor less.
