8 - Wednesday, June 27, 1990 - North Shore News Craftsman style strived for an informal look Dear Editor: Regarding your article, “*Renovating 1913 home a history lesson’’ in your March 30 issue: I was most interested and pleas- ed to see your article about one of the many Craftsman houses in the North Lonsdale area. The descrip- tion of Crafisman was not, how- ever, quite correct. Its roots are found in the English Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th century which de- liberately turned its back on mechanized design and sought a revival of craftsmanship. The movement led to the Prairie style under Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago, who designed many houses in the style between 1900 KANISHKA SEMI-ANNUAL WAREHOUSE and 1913, and the Craftsman style (1905-30) of Charles and Henry Greene in southern California and Gustav Stickley, the publisher of the “Craftsman.” In British Columbia, the most influential Craftsman architect was Samuel Maclure of New Westminster, Victoria and Van- couver. In general, the Craftsman house strived for an informal, hand- crafted look through the use of natural materials and asym- metrical elevations, covered with wood shingles and decorative half-timbering.
