Family activities set at demo forest ADDING TO the special celebra- tions for the kick-off to National Forest Week in the Greater Van- conver Regional District's Seymour Demonstration Forest for Sunday, May 6 is a special uppear- ance by the Honorable Claude Richmond, Minister of Forests for British Cotumbia. Richmond will take part in the official celebrations al) i p.m. which include a tree planting cer- emony. Other federal, provincial and locai government fepresentati- ves are included in the | p.m. cele- brations. There are special activities throughout the day for the whole family including a special visit from the Freddie Fuddpucker Band. Imagination Market will be holding a workshop from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be free face painting and loads of other hands-on activities for children. Take part in the special passport contest. Colfect over 30 exciting stamps at the booths and exhibits in the forest. Guided tours take place every hour beginning at 11 a.m. Travel on an easy 1.5 kilometre trail that is suitable for the whole family. Special displays will include live fish from the Seymour River Hatchery, wood carving demonstrations, the Reid Collins **cruiser’s camp,’ a special display of nature books for children, the B.C. Forest Museum exhibit, and the hands-on tree exhibit il- lustrating the different parts of a tree. There are also displays from B.C. Parks, North Shore Rescue, Ministry of Forests, B.C. Forestry Association and both UBC and BCIT schools of forestry. Visitors can climb aboard some of the ma- chinery used for tree harvesting and road building and have a lock at some of the important cquip- ment used for fighting fires in the forest. Free seedlings wil! be handed out throughout the day. Children get to meet Smokey the Bear and Rikki Recycle face to face and paw to friendly paw. The Seymour Demonstration Forest is in the District of North Vancouver. From Vancouver, cross the Second Narrows Bridge and take the third exit (Number 22, Capilano Coliege).
