Our Economy good for bulk terminals, chemical plants From page 31 um Ltd.: The Canadian Oxy plant has been a fixture on the North Vanceuver waterfront since 1957, and since then new technology has been added, particulalry during plant expansions in 1967, 1972, 1974 and modernization in 1983. In North Vancouver, Canadian Oxy produces chlorine, caustic soda and muriatic acid using the Chlor-Alkali Process, which uses three raw materials: salt, water and electrical energy. The company’s principal inter- ests are oil, gas and chemicals and the company also markets sulphur and explores for minerals. Canadian Oxy has three chlor- alkali plants, and the North Van- couver plant produces 405 tonnes of chlorine and 450 tonnes of caustic soda daily. The North Vancouver plant currently employs 172 people. Over the past five years, the $160-million North Vancouver plant paid over $4 million in municipal taxes. *Dow Chemical Canada Inc.: Dow Chemical's West Coast distribution centre is located in North Vancouver near the Second Narrows Bridge. Since the facility was opened, terminal employees have handled more than 75,000 railroad tank cars and loaded over 1,000 ships and barges without a serious inju- ry or harmful spill. The plant is also a transfer point for Dow chemicals bound for world markets. Last year Dow's North Van- couver plant unloaded 10,000 tailears and loaded 76 ships. 121 barges and 500 trucks. © Albright & Wilson Americas: The plant employs approximately 60 people and produces an average of 69,000 tonnes of sodi- um chlorate annually. The product is shipped to pulp Mills and used in the production of dioxin-free pulp bleaching agent, chlorine dioxide.
