40 - Sunday, Murch 20, 198% North Shore News TRAVEL LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE STUDY Tour ancient Chinese gardens of Suzhou A TOUR GROUP FROM Van- couver will be leaving in May to discover for themselves the ancient gardens of Suzhou, after which our own Dr. Sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver was modelled. They will seck to understand the principles of Chinese landscape ar- chitecture, and its underlying phil- osophic concepts based on ancient Taoist religious views of world order, The tour is sponsored by the Canada-China Friendship Associa- tion of Vancouver: an organization whose purpose is to promote friendly relations between Canada and China. Tour Jeaders are Ken Woodsworth, who has led several tours to China, and Ingeborg Day who is a landscape designer and botanist. Both Jeaders are docents at the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Classical Garden. The tour, called Parks, Gardens and Beauty Spots of China, will also visit the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing, where the father of modern China is buried. The group will go to the famous Stone Forest near scenic Kunming in the far south-west; to Chengdu in west China where there are an- cient Taoist mountainside temples; to the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, the Ming Tombs and other sites in and near Beijing, and to the old summer gardens of the New park system established A SYSTEM of six new B.C. provincial parks and rec- reation areas has been established on Kootenay Lake. The new system comprises 302 hectares (746 acres) of lakefront land, some with road access, and in- cludes: ® Midge Creck Provincial Park (223 hectares}, on the west side of the lake opposite the community of Sanca, with over 1,000 metres of sandy beach. Access is frora the lake. © Kaslo Bay Provincial Park (2 hectares), north of Kaslo, with 60 metres of sandy beach accessible either from Highway 31 or by boat. We're going to make sure that cost doesn’t come [ — © Coffee Creek Provincial Park (71 hectares), north of Balfour on the west shore of the lake, a beach arca accessible from Highway 31. © Campbell Bay Provincial Park (25 hectares). on the east side of the lake, with 30 metres of sand and cobble beach (boat access only), offering sheltered anchorage and a trail leading to several small moun- tain lakes. @ Lost Ledge Recreation Area (3 hectares), a nar- row strip of land between Highway 31 and the west shore of the lake, cight kilometres south of Lardeau. © Davis Creck Recreation Area (5 hectares), just south of Lardeau, with both road and water access. Emperors at Chengde. The tour includes a boat trip down the ancient Grand Canal to Suzhou and then to the lakeside park city of Hangzhou. The group returns to Vancouver after visiting Shanghai. In addition to visiting famous parks and gardens, there will also be trips to see country villages and the life of market gardeners.
