member British Columbia
Automobile Association recently
came Out strongly against propos-
ed regulations to inerease the
overall length ol transport trac-
tor-trailers to 82 teet.

This represents an increase of six
and a half feet to the existing max-
imum limit in seven provinces and
an increase of 11 to 16 feet in the
remaining three.

BCAA cautioned against per-
mitting these ‘‘truck trains’ to roll
on B.C. highways, citing studies
which have made a strong connec-
tion between extended fength trac-

toctrailer combinations and a
disproportionately high number ot
accidents involving trucks.

While the trucking industry has
claimed that the extended trailers
are safe, it has failed to back the
claims with any conclusive
evidence. With an) ever-growing
number of small passenger cars on
Canadian roads and — increased
car-truck size disparity it poses a
greater than ever danger to the
private motorist.

According to the AAA Founda-
tion for Traffic Safety: ‘*For every
truck driver who dies in 2 collision
with a passenger vehicle, 32
automobile occupants are killed."’
