Smokers butt out for the New Year

IT’S NOW four days into the new
year and those who have madu a
resolution to quit smoking this
year are likely finding the craving
is creeping up on them.

But each January many people
can give a boost to their New
Year's resolution when as many as
50,000 smokers province-wide butt
out on Cold Turkey Day.

Many, however, are soon smok-
ing again, believing they are hook-
ed for good.

Learning how to break a long-
standing habit, coupled with some
advance preparation, can make all
the difference in successfully quit-
ting smoking, says the Registered
Nurses Association of B.C.

This year, Jan. 21 is Cold
Turkey Day in B.C. and the
RNABC together with the B.C.
Lung Association is advising
smokers to build up to the idea of
quitting smoking by planning
ahead of time.

There are two ways to stop
smoking — either taper off gradu-
ally or quit cold turkey, say the
registered nurses.

But even if you decide to quit
cold turkey, that does not mean
simply waking up one day and
deciding to quit. People have to be
psychologically prepared.

To this end, RNABC has come
up with a number of tips to help
smokers break free of the tobacco
habit once and for all.

© Write a list of reasons for
quitting smoking. Among these,
consider improved lung and heart
capacity, cleaner-smelling breath,
hair and clothes, and the satisfac-
tion of beating a harmful addic-

.tion.

Keep the note handy to remind
yourself why you are going to quit.

¢ Figure out how much money
will be saved by not buying ciga-
rettes and decide what to do with
the amount saved. At today’s
prices, people who smoke 1%
packs a day will spend about
$45,000 over their smoking life-
time.

¢ Set a quitting date a week or
two away and stick to it. Circle the
calendar and start believing that
from this date on you will be a

non-smoker.

© If you know another smoker,
decide to become quitting buddies
and break the habit together. The
buddy system works even if one
partner is a non-smoker.

Giving up desserts or alcohol or
promising to stick to a fitness
routine can be equally difficult
goals. Tell friends and family
you'll be needing their encourage-
ment and support.

e Switch cigarette brands as you
prepare to quit, smoke just half of
each cigarette and cut back on the
number smoked each day.

When you feel the urge to smoke
reach for a stick of gum, try some
deep breathing or do something
physical such as going for a walk
or bike ride. Successful quitters
report these techniques do help,
says the RNABC,

© Acknowledge even your small
successes by doing something nice
for yourself. As you begin to gain
control over cigarettes, treat
yourself to a movie, buy some new
clothes or have lunch out with a
non-smoking friend.
