Where alternating - freezing and
thawing may. lift and damage iris
roots, it is advisable to cover the
rhizomes with a mulch of corn
husks, straw or pine boughs once
the ground freezes.

Transplanting

Most plants will bloom the spr-
ing after. planting. After three
years .the rhizomes should be
divided and re-set.

Do this i in their. dormant period,
which is mid-summer. Dig out the
clumps and wash them clean. .

Cut out damaged areas and
divide. with a knife. Plant the
healthy rhizomes showing buds or
with two young rhizomes with new
feed roots. Before re-planting, cut
back the leaf-fans half-way.

Plant rhizomes in a triangle or
staggered (not. ina circle) with

leaf-fans facing out in the same -
direction.

Remove stalks after blooming.
