Pemberton Houston Willoughby (PHW) will establish offices in a new building now under construc- tion at 250-1Sth Street in West Van when the building is completed, possibly in October. We will return to our usual in- vestment discussion next week .) By my _ reckoning, this means the North Shore will soon have three brokerage houses or branches, the ex- y* Year Manx. A number of points make the PHW move worthy of note: They are prominent in B.C.’s financial affairs; they are Vancouver’s largest brokerage house on a truly comparative basis, namely in terms of dollar volume of business; and their chairman is a prominent West Vancouverite. $$$ by Another distinguishing feature is that the Pemberton name is synonymous with the early history of this area. From that beginning they branched out into bonds and other business ventures. PHW does some business on the Vancouver Stock Ex- change, but the bulk of its trading is on the Toronto and New York exchanges. W. Robert Wyman, chair- man of PHW, reminds us that a good proportion of its business is not stock ex- change business as such; but in bonds and new issues, that is, underwritings. For exam- ple it is fiscal agent for the Province of B.C.; it is an underwriter for many large companies in western Canada, such as B.C. Telephone. The company organized the financing for the re-build of the Wood fibre pulp mill (on Howe Sound), which involved the raising of more than $200 million and the creation of the Western Pulp Partnership. $$$ Initially the West Van of- fice will be staffed by five brokers, including two seniors. They will have sup- port staff but no accounting will be done there because they will be linked by com- puter with the head office in Vancouver. (That, in one sense, is another parochial plus — a national brokerage house with head office in Vancouver.) The manager of the new West Van branch has been appointed, he’s a West Van resident, but the announce- ment won't be made until the appointment receives” the usual clearance of the stock exchanges and the _ Invest- ment Dealers Association. Which brings us to Wyman, himself, a man of impressive credentials He ts president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Chancellor of the University of BC With an eye lo the future, he observes. ‘‘We(already) have a substantial clientele on the North Shore ' ON TERM DEPOSITS Rates subject to change without notice North Shore Community Credit Union Seven Branches serving the North Shore and Whistler.
