Government benefits available to seniors

SENIORS — are you getting
all your government
benefits? This is an impor-
tant question for seniors to
keep asking as government
programs do change, and
retired people, especially on
fixed incomes, need to know
what assistance is available.

formation lectures for North

seniors) are continuing in
November with the topic
‘“‘Am I getting All My
Benefits?’’ Qualified
speakers will provide perti-
nent information on _ the
many Federal and Provincial
programs and explain how
much are the benefits, who is
eligible, where and how to

old Bonnie Murray of North
Vancouver, who has suffered
from multiple sclerosis since
1975, says, ‘‘Fatigue is the
big thing with me... My walk-
ing was really bad when }!
started (in January).

‘*Now I have more energy
— I’m walking better. | can
swim four laps. It’s just
unreal.’’

Murray worked for B.C.

she retired. She immediately
joined the program.

‘‘When I left work, it was
hke I had to dress — and then
lie down. Eat, and then he
down. I don’t have to do that
any more.’”’

Annette McLaughlin, also
of North Vancouver, has
noticed a ‘‘tremendous’’ im-
provement in her husband
James, who is recovering
from a stroke which happen-
ed in March.

‘“‘Oh yes, wonderful. His
walking is getting a lot bet-
ter.... And his left hand,
which was closed tight at the
beginning of the program is
slackening off. It really is
helping him.’’

Most of the people in the
program were referred to it
from Lion’s Gate Hospital,
and some heard of it through
their dotors or friends.
McLean said the program is
part of a ‘‘fitness package’’
paid for by each participant.

McLean says the program
needs volunteers. Although
she usually has about four
volunteers each session to
help her, they need two or
three more.

Volunteers would drive
participants to the class,
assist them in walking and
changing, and help them in
and out of the pool, McLean
said.
