This year marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the North Shore Secondary Schools’

Athietic Association which organizes inter-schoo! athletics in 16 sports for boys and 14 for giris in
| the 13 North Shore high schools.

Some 250 teachers spend thousands of hours of volunteer time coaching and sponsoring these
teams.

The North Shore's goais of high participation and excellence have developed since 1958 to the

point where the Association has been recognized tor many years as the leader among the 20 locai
associations around the province.

As part of a series of events celebrating this special year, displays will be shown at three North
Shore mails (Capilano, March 18-19; Westlynn, March 25-26; and Park Royal, April 15-16) and a
North Shore Quarter-Century, Quarter-Marathon Road Run (open to everyone) will be held Sunday,
April 24, starting at 9:00 a.m. on the south side of Park Royal South.

ATHLETES’ PROFILES

Known as “Mighty Mouse” during her years as Canada’s greatest swimmer, she was setting

records for Hillside in the B.C. high school swim meet in 1968 after winning four gold medals at the

1966 Commonwealth Games in Jamaica and two silvers at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico.

B. AB.C. high schoo! basketball first all-star in both 1966 and 1967, he led North Vancouver to third
and sixth place finishes those seasons and then played four years on a scholarship at Central
Washington University. :

C. Unbeatable in the shot and discus while at Handsworth and Delbrook (her 1966 senior perfor-
mances are still North Shore meet records) she was internationally known in the javelin, holding the

Canadian record tor ten years, placing second in the 1967 Pan-American Games and third in the
1966 and 1970 Commonwealth Games

D. A North Shore high schoo! first all-star in basketbal! three straight years (1963-65) while at Argyie
and North Van, he played for U.B.C.'s national champions in 1970 and on Canada’s national team
before returning to coach at Argyle where his team was in B.C. final last year. He's now the U.B.C.
