But it would still cost $150 million, according to Highways Minister Alex Fraser. He said the government is not prepared to spend the whole province's highways budget on one road. The Capilano proposal has drawback, one worrisome to ment even when Phil Gagiardi was Highways Minister in the 50's. It has received a lot of flak route another that was the govern: from people wanting to protect the watershed, which provades water for mu@bh of Greater Vancouver. Two other proposals, one Suggesting a route through the Seymour watershed, the other opting for the west side of Indian Arm, are also being considered by the ministry. They are both more ex- pensive than the Capilano route, according to Dan Williams, highways technician for North Vancouver District Ministry of Highways. As well, the Seymour route would also run through a watershed which supplies water to urban areas. Williams agrees the in- cidence of closures has increased lately but says it could be part of acycle. According to long-time Highways workers, slides and washouts were fairly frequent 10-15 years ago. Willimans told the News, but then a lot of work was done on the highway and _ the number of incidents decreased. The current spate of troubles could be another bad spell, he said. On December 4, about 20,000 cubic metres of rock completely buried the concrete Strachan bridge at Charles Creek, and dunng the slide a 31-year-old pregnant‘woman was washed away. The highway was closed for two days. For a three-year penod from January 1, 1978 to October 31, 1981, there were 164 accidents in the Hor- seshoe Bay to Sunset Creek Bridge section of the highway alone. « The accidents resulted in one fatality, 86 people hospitalized, 11S injuries and $397,213. in property again damage, according to figures | supplied by the Vancouver Board of Trade. The -rgad” should = also reach its peak capacity of 7,100 vehciles a day by 1985, according to the Board of Trade, and increased demand on the highway is likely. In response to the tragic occurrences this fall, the Ministry of Highways has given the section of Highway 99 between Squamish and- Horseshoe Bay a_ higher prionity in the hst of highway work to be done.
