Metro opens new season

The Metro
League got tHe 1980-81
season underway Sunday
with two North Shore teams
hosting opening action.

Hockey

In the afternoon opener at
West Van arena the West
Van Rockets gave a rude
welcome to the newest entry
into the league, exploding
for eight third period goals
to shut out the Burnaby
Winter Club 12-0.

Danny Corrigan put the
Rockets on the scoreboard

midway through the first
frame to account for the
period’s only goal and for
what proved to be the game
winner.

The Rockets added three
more tallies in the second
period before their
devastating cight goal on-
slaught in the third.
Corrigan, Craig Harman, Jim
Buhr, Steve Stuart and Mark
Ingram each scored twice
for the winners with Brian
Chatfield and Paul Pattison
adding singletons. Rex

Biedler led the way m the
assist department with four.
Randy Smith and Glen
Luscombe had an casy time
in sharing the rocket
shutout, facing only 12 shots
over the three periods while
Dave Hunt m the Burnaby
net turned aside 5O Rocket
blasts in a losing cause.

In the only other Metro
League game on Sunday the
North Van Picasso's dropped
a $2 decision to the Port
Coquitlam Blazers.

North Van's scoring was
confined to the first period
with both goal coming off
the stick of Bob Murphy,
while PoCo tallied with three
to lead 3-2 at the end of onc.

After a scoreless second
period Poco added two more
late m the third for a 5-2
fimal_

Shots on gaol were evenly
divided with North Van's
Dave Warren kecking asaic
41 shots while Kevin Wall
handled an equal number for
the Blazers.

Kipriakis take over lead

Kipriaki Soccer Club
moved into sole possession
of first place in 2b soccer on
the weekend with a 3-0 win
over Ambleside Blues.

The win gives Kips a
record of three wins and two
draws for eight points,
keeping them one point

Rockets blast by GSL Panthers

The Rockets blasted the
Panthers 31-12 as Mike
Hodges and Stuart Wright
took off with two touch-
downs each in the Gordon
Sturtridge Flag football
game Sunday.

Mike Hodges opened the
scoring for the rockets on a
60 yard sweep around end.
Ernie Redden replied for the
Panthers to make it an even
ball game at the end of the
first quarter of play.

Warten Anderson put the
Rockets bck out in front with
his touchdown, but Arden
Fowler's major ted the game
up again.

Stuart Wright then scored
on a 70 yard jaunt to give the
Rockets an 1812 lead,
which they took tmto the
second half

Rockets never looked
back as Wnght and Hodges

ahead of West Van Rovers
who fought to a scoreless
draw with Darmen on
Sunday.

Rovers have a
record.

A goal by Ron Wilson
from McClean gave Kipriaki

3-1-1

notched a couple more
touchdowns. Steven Juliet
and Doug Bust both played
strong defensive games for
the winners. Mike Bow was
the defensive stalwart for the
Panthers.

Elfiott Cherneski, Mathew
Riley, Merritt Hutchins and
Ross Jouchin all scored one
touchdown cach to give the
Raiders a 26-0 win over the
Juskies.

In Minor football action.
Lions clawed the Bombers
26-6 behind ai three
touchdown ecffon by Troy
Cook. Bobby Best rounded
out the Lions scoring attack
with one touchdown. Best
also played a solid defensive
game.

Trevor Mayes was the
lone scorer for the Bombers

Roughies blanked Browns
190 w ther Minor game

a 1-0 half nme lead. In the
second haif Kipnaki took
the flow of play and at the 55
minute mark Paul Bolducci
scored on a pass from Rob
Boyd.

Rob Foot finished off the
scormg on an assist from
Bolducci.

Scott Findlay scored twice
on 35 and 10 yard runs.
Derrick Andall, on a pass
and ron from quarterback
Brad Peto, added the fimal

action with the help of
touchdowns by Craig
Morgan and Mark Davss.
David Culling hicked one
convert for the Esks, while
lan Culling and = Paal
Donohoe put m_ cxacelicnot
efforts on defence.

Steelers dumped Vikmgs
20-0 on a two touchdown
effort by Tommy King and
one by Scot Jorsvick

Dick Burns picked up the
shut out. The Kipriaki goalie
has held the opposition to
four goals in five games.

Oa Saturday the North
Shore entry take on New
West Lackies in New
Westminster.

Cameron Res’ led the
defensive anit with 10
primary tackles.
