Valley family boasts three winning musicians FOUR PIANOS and three pianists enliven the home of Lynn. Valley residents David and Mei-Wen Tang. 14, and Jonathan, 11, keep their parents busy going to perfor- mances and competitions where they are consistently top achievers. At home, the young Tangs each have their own piano so that they can get §1 up to two hours a day of practise, with an extra piano available for playing concertos. The oldest of the three children, Betty broke the ground in this musical family, starting piano lessons when she was six. She went on to compete in the CMCs (Ca- nadian Music Competitions) for five years in a row, earning a first ' place at the national competion for her age group last year. Her Royal Conservatory ARCT exams were completed in 1986, when she was only 13. Now in Grade 11, Betty accom- panies the North Shore Junior Bach Choir and the Argyle Senior Jazz Choir and is active on the students’ council. . Judy, who is in Grade 9 at Argyle, adds students’ council and * drama to piano, which she began learning at age five and a half. : Hours of practising and com- - peting recently earned her a 93 per cent score, first place standing and : $100 at the CMC finals held in ‘Joliette, Quebec. it was the third year that the Jocal Kiwanis Festival recommend- ed her for competition at the B.C. provincial Festival of Arts. She - competed in the up to 13 years age group in 1986, the up to 17 age _group last year, and in the up to 30 year age group this year, winning each time. : In addition, she earned 96 per cent in her Royal Conservatory exams, the highest score in Canada for an _ARCT performer’s diploma. ~ Judy is not planning a career in music. “} like iz'as a hobby,”’ she says. Judy is used to the routine of coming home to practise before doing her homework. “Piano has helped me in my school work by improving my abil- ity to memorize,’”’ says Judy. Eleven-year-old Jonathan started piano at five, but his father feels he got even more of a head start listening to his sisters practise from the time he was a baby. At age six he mastered Grades ! to 3 and has continued to complete two grades per year. He received 96 per cent in his Grade 10 exams this year. It takes a lot. of practise to achieve these kinds of results, but Jonathan jokingly sloughes it off. “It helps pass the time,’’ he laughs.
