: Saturday, : Aug.- 28; Dear Editor: * When comparing: the actions of | the loggers in the Clayoquot this summer with the actions of the Peace Camp protesters, one sces a serious double standard inthe way these two groups are treated. _ The loggers forced two. buses off the road carrying businesspeo- ple and seniors on their way to the Clayoquot. ard: disabled vehicles by flattening their tires to leave them stranded. The Peace Camp protesters, on ‘the other hand, maintained the highest standards in non-violent . Ghandian style civil disobedience. | -Mever once all summer did they disable a ‘Single logging truck or: “vehicle. Their blockade was: only sym “-bolic'in that they did not actually obstruct logging operations. A-dlockade would form when . the loggers arrived, the injunction ‘would be read, the 200 or so pro- “testers. who ‘attended every day’ would ‘then leave the road ‘cacept ‘for a handful. of .arrestees who “would quickly and peaceably be taken away.” - /The loggers would only be de- * tained {6 minutes or so each day “in this token, protest and the log- Bing, continued unabated: Yet in spite of the commendable > discipline: “of the «Peace ..Camp _ Protesters, they are treated as Open letter to the happy motorist ~ (with one headlight): - When. you: headed up the ‘Squamish Highway at..10 p.m. were. you ‘under “the” impression that you would be* the’ only” one on the “toad? I expected to see verbal con- ‘frontations between the two groups in a highly tense environ- ment. Skore News Louise Aird quotes me as saying that ! am opposed to . this region in decades. Transport 202! will be ready for public comment shortly. I am not a fan of ‘‘ad hockery,’’ in transportation, education or health care planning. I Sook forward to an informed discussion of the options regarding the Lions Gate Bridge within a framework of a comprehensive transportation plan for Greater Vancouver. That way any decision makes sense now and in the future. Mayor Gordon Campbell Vancouver Dear Editor: How come gas is cheaper on Denman Island and Hornby Island than on the North Shore? Do they have their own vil wells? How come the gas is mostly the same price all over the North Shore? Is there no competition? Who has the monopoly, the gas stations, the gas distributors? This is strange to me, coming from Ontario where gas varied in price (usually less than here) so that one could shop around from one district to another, or cross the street to another station. \ The cheaper stations earned our extra business.
