Head, who has since graduated from Emily Carr College of Art, looked at photos and a video tape of Draycott and spoke to Draycott’s next-door neighbor, Edna Chapman, before he started the work in order to be able to best capture Draycott’s manner and perscaality. MacDonald recently said that Head worked hand-in-hand with another Lynn Valley resident, Jack Harman, who donated his time to do the bronze casting of the statue. ““He was really there day by day with Kevin,’’ said MacDonald. MacDonald also praised district Mayor Marilyn Baker for her strong support of the project and her efforts to drum up the finan- cial contributions needed. MacDonald said that people were always ‘‘cautiously pessimistic about what might hap- pen’? to the seated statue. Any worries concerning vandalism have since been dissipated by the affec- tion with which the statue has ob- viously been received, as indicated by the newspapers or flowers that will often be put in Draycott’s hands, or the scarf that finds its way around his neck in the winter- time. “Even before it was unveiled, little kids were sitting on its knee,”’ MacDenald said. ‘*Walter’s still hanging around, I’m sure.”* KEVIN HEAD, left, works on a mode! of the Walter Draycott FOR SALES statue that he sculpted in 1986, in the while the life-size creation sits in the background.
