A woman living in the 2700) block of Mathers Avenue was awakened shordy before 5 a.m. by the sound of her cat scratching at the bed- room window, West Vancouver Fire Capt. Aime Lehouillier said. The cat was trying desper- ately to escape smoke that was quickly filling the house. “Ir was making a lot of noise. She woke up and saw the smoke,” Lehouillier said. The woman then woke ber 26-vear old male tenant and they beth fled the burn- ing house. “(The male tenant) saw flames in the living room,” Lehouillicr said, then ran toa neighbor's home to phone the fire department. Meanwhile, a plucky neighbor rescued one of the woman's five cats by climbing through a window, Two kit- tens died in the blaze. A crew of nine firefighters on three pumpers arrived shortly after 50 am. and ‘ doused the fire. “When I got there they had pur the fire cut and it was smoldering, but the house is gutted,” Lehouillier said. The Joss is estimated ar $200,000. The fire spread to parts of the garage. The two occu- parts of the house suffered minor smoke inhalation.
