From page 4 she unsuccessfully tried to navigate through a maze of newly constructed crosswalks just east of the bridge. A. serics of uncontrolled crosswalks were constructed io provide bicycle and pedes- trian traffic with access to either sidewalk from cither side of the bridge in anticipa- tion of the sidewalks’ impend- ing closure as construction work on the bridge progress- es. Kind was crossing the Deep Cove off-ramp and pro- ceeded westward along Main Street toward her Rupert Street home. But she said traffic at the Mountain Highway intersection scared her off and she retraced her steps. “I'll come back and cross at the pedestrian crossing — that’s the safest place,” said Kind. Her récollection of events thereafter is a little spotty. “Em a little foggy on it, my memory isn't very good ... 1 don't know if it’s from the accident.” said Kind. “It was clear, and the next thing | know I'm getting hit. { Friday, June 7, 1996 ~ North Shore News — ike crosswalk emporary Tix “The next thing [ remem- ber after that... But, most importantly for the 32-year- old residential care worker, her baby appears to have escaped the mishap unscathed. “They've checked the heartbeat and they've said the baby’s fine,” said Kind. “That's all they can do.” Robin Pryce, Kind's hus- band, says his wife's accident was bound to happen sconer or later. He questions why a series of crosswalks were’: constructed in place of an overpass like the one near the léss-congested Westview and Upper Levels Highway inter- section. “That whole area has just been crazy. I don’t know why they built just the crosswalks around there,” said Pryce. North Vancouver's bicycle coordinator Emma Dal Santo agreed that the crosswalks probably aren't the safest alternative, but stopped short of endorsing an overpass option. She said consultants work- ing for MoTH contacted her about various options und picked one of her suggestions —— although it wasn't her first choice. Dal Santo said she favored the construction of a path underneath the bridge deck to connect the two side- walks mirroring the trail net- work beneath the Lions Gate Bridge. MoTH spokesman Brenda Jones said the ministry's goal was to improve access to the bridge for the duration of the project only. She said cutting back the area’s shrubbery was one; of the ways officials tried to improve cyclists’ sight dis- tances and safety. She added that while an overpass may have been considered as an option, cost would have played a role in its dismissal. “Cost is always an issue at the ministry.” said Jones. But Pryce didn’t ease. up. “It's a really screwed-up area. The engineer who designed that just wasn’t on the ball.” said Pryce. “(We) gotta make an example of this area.” BRENDA Kind is grateful an accident that reduced her to getting around with the heip of a cane ANNUAL.
