At Monday night's district council meeting, council gave the green-light to a working agreement between the district and TAKaya Developments to build and operate a multi-sheet ice facility on Burrard Band land. The site is located south-west of the TAKaya Golf Centre on Apex Ave. TAKaya De is the building division of the Burrard Band. “If the agreement that gets signed in the next little while is favorable then the negotiations will continue on and be extended to include tennis,” says Walker. “Tennis was included on our (Rec Commission's) part. because of the need fer tennis and because over the last few years we have been looking for a suitable focation. This is what we've tried to pul on the table there (with TA Raya)” Bul according to a spokesman at TAKaya’s North Van office, “As faras Dean tell, we don’t have any tennis courts laid out on the cur- rent plans. oul nothing’s concrete yet” She added, however, that some sort of indoor recreation facility Friday, October 27, 1995 ~ North Shore News - & jayers face et will most dikely accompany tie multi-rink design. So for NSITCA members, the uncertainty continues. the only certain things sur- rounding the issue of i North Shore indoor tennis facility are that all involved — from players to politicians to bureaucrats —~ admit the demand is there, and also that an indvor facility would pay for itself --— facts that add to NSIT- CA's frustrations. . Indeed. according to Walker, “We're really keen on getting this thing going, because it is a project that will pay for itself. There's only two sports that do. There's golf and there's tennis." inter Walker commends the tennis community for its patience during the search, for a location, saying that the ree commission has told the NSITCA to put everything on hold until the TAKaya develop- ment is addressed. If that site falls through, Walker says the next possible location to explore is at Lillooet Park at Capilano College: “It's a bit of a shoe-horn, but it could fit.” The 1991 Draft Parks and Recreation Master Plan for North Vancouver recognized the demand for a public indoor tennis facility. Four years later, the tennis com- munity is no closer to geuing in out of the rain. 10 MINUTE .
