NORTH SHORE residents are going to be asked to en-
dorse a proposal by B.C. Telephone Company (8C Tel)
that would make all phone calls from Bowen Islend to
Maple Ridge, to Aldergrove toll-free. In exchange for the
service, North Shore phone bills will jump by 42%
($5.45 per month) for residential service and 46% ($19.40
per month) for business service. BC Tel claims that 64%
of North Shore residents regularly make long-distance

calls within the affected area. Opponents say BC Tel is
trying to eliminate long-distance competition by broad-
ening its exclusive market. Others just say it’s a money
grab. Supporters of the proposal say it’s about time we
had our toll-free service updated to meet the demand,
and that most of the increase is just bringing the North
Shore’s phone rates in-line with other Lower Mainland

Grant Robert Sinail, 30, North
Vancouver, was jailed seven days
and fined $300 after he pleaded
guilty to driving on Marine Drive
while prohibited on March 30 in
