Engineers can’t simply
plug in items on demand

What about the airbag?

No, you can't simply add a
built-in airbag steering wheel. The
addition of a driver’s side airbag
requires a complete re-examina-
tion, and a potentially extensive
design change on the driver's ‘side
of the interior, not to mention all
the sensors and wires that have to
be designed into the vehicle.

The car would have to be re-
crash iested, both by the computer
as well as by the crash test dum-
mies. .

By now, I hope you're begin-
ning to appreciate the amount of
energy, time, and money
automakers would have to fork
out in order to add a simple-look-
ing integrated console or a com-
plicated active suspension,

In any case, the car makers
have to ask themselves — usually
through the eyes of the marketing
team — whether the money and
time required to make the change
would eventually pay off in in-
creased sales.

Sometimes the answer is, no,
and you don't see any change un-
til the next model change-over,

and other times the answer is yes, -

and you see the change within a
