WORKING AT HOME Don't overlook protection of documents FOR AN increasing number of Canadians, com- muting to work has taken on a new meaning — since their office is located right in their own home. According to estimates, millions currently work from a home office, and government studies project that as much as one-third of the workforce will work from home within the next 20 years. “Whether these workers are entrepreneurs conduc- ting their own business from home, company employees fulfilling their job functions away from the main office, or others simply catching up on paper- work, one thing they have in common is that they keep in their home important documents or business records that they would not want to lose,”’ states Jim Brush, marketing manager of a fire-resistant safes and storage containers firm. “Yet there is an all too present danger that those papers could be lost or destroyed — due to fire,’’ he warns. Every day in Canada, hundreds of homes are struck by fire. Yet, despite those statistics, research has shown that most people do not take even basic precautions to protect important possessions from be- ing destroyed in a fire. “As more people work from their homes, those precautions take on even greaier importance,’’ Brush adds, ‘‘so that vital business records — both on paper and on computer media — are not reduced to ashes.” The most basic protective measure is to store im- portant papers and computer diskettes in a safe or siorage box that is specially engineered to protect its contents from fire. Containers that carry the Under- writers Laboratories (U.L.) label, have undergone rigorous testing to ensure that their contents will re- main safe through even the most severe fire. Fire-resistant containers come in a variety of sizes and configurations to meet any home office storage need, Millions of personal computers have been sold for home use, and many of those are being used for con- ducting business at home. That means fire protection is also a vital precaution for one’s software and diskettes, which are even more vulnerable to heat and humidity than is paper. Whether one keeps just a few business papers at home for occasional use, or operates a full-scale home-based business complete with hundreds of vital records, it is senseless to court disaster -— especially when fire protection for those documents is sa easy to obtain.
