Corpses litter
Cove property

A DEEP Cove man who
just over a year ago built a
$700,000 dream home is fed
up with living next door to
pesky rodent neighbors —
they keep dying on_ his
property.

Douglas Saxon regularly finds
rat corpses littering his yard and
the area around his 300-block
North Dollarton Highway home.

He built the house neat to a
district-owned road allowance.
The undeveloped strip Jot contains
blackberry bushes, habitat in
which rats are happy to live.

The lot is regularly used as a
pathway by area residents. Others
use it as an unofficial dumping
ground.

Saxon says he has partially
landscaped the lot “to make it
look better."’

Last year he complained to
health department and North
Vancouver District officials about
the rats.

Saxon maintains the district was
told last year by a health depart-
ment investigator that there was a
rat problem on the lot. He says
the investigator recommended that
bushes on the lot be removed.

**¥et the (district) came back to
me that there was no problem
with rats and not to worry about
it. So obviously they misled me,"
he said.

Rat corpses appeared on his
property again this month and an
irate Saxon phoned the mayor.

Said North Vancouver District
engineering ‘services director John
Bremner, “Our policy on these
kinds of areas is not to go in and
do a whole Ict of clean up and
landscaping unless there is a vec-
tor (rat) problem.

““We try to stay with doing it
where there is an identified prob-
lem. But if it’s just somebody who
wants it cleaned up because it isn’t
pretty to look at, we just don’t
have the resources to do that.

“If there is any indication that
there are rats in an area, we
would go in and ciean it out. The
decision was made (last year) that
there didn’t appear to be a
specific problem at that point. It
hasn’t changed a great deal now
except that the brambles are
thicker and heavier,’”’ Bremner
added.

Bremner said the district will
remove blackberry bushes that
have been identified as potential
rat homes.

Said Saxon, ‘‘it’s ridiculous.
You don’t have a house like this
to Jook at a piece of junk over on
the other side. It endangers our
family.’
