Gino’s features a hot new oven and a variety of excellent pizzas and pastas. Roaming the streets for treats : ITH THE onset of . the monsoons, ° North Shore ap- petites might be somewhat waterlogged. Table Hopping has therefore taken a stroll up Lonsdale and along other North Shore streets to savor the sodden local! airs and sniff the winds of restaurant change. So stuff those knives and forks into your upper coat pockets and join us. The regular four-course restau- rant review will return in the next Table Hopping episode. GINO’S ORIGINAL BRICK OVEN PIZZERIA, 105 WEST 20TH STREET, NORTH VAN- COUVER, 985-9115. Gino’s has a brick oven heart that shouid warm the sensibilities of pizzaphiles everywhere. Originating in Naples in distant pizza past, brick pizza and bread ovens reach higher temperatures than conventional pizza ovens: up to 1,000 F compared with 700 F with non-brick ovens. The high heat cooks pizzas and breads faster — in three to five minutes, about half the time for a conventional oven — making them lighter and crispier. The special brick oven also allows Gino’s to turn out such delightful fast foods as Calzone (or turned over) pizza and a Sicilian- style bread that is pillow-shaped and pillow-soit. The restaurant was opened on Jan. 22 by Gino and Ani Milano, who also own a Gino’s in Van- couver’s Dunbar area. They cele- brated an official grand opening of their North Vancouver branch on Jan. 28. And while the North Vancouver branch was still struggling through that awkward new restaurant phase when visited by Table Hopping (young waitresses crack- ing under the service industry pressures and disappearing into the night), the food sampled was very good, Sampled slabs of the restaurant’s table hopping Sicilian bread were similar to the breads made in East indian tan- doori ovens: crisp on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. The house Calzone pizza ($8.95 for a 10 inch; $10.95 for a 12 in- cher) featured a long, thick crust, stuffed with cheeses, tomato sauce and meats. It’s like a roast leg of pizza. Recommended Gino’s also has a selection of pastas ranging from Fettuccine Alfredo to Lasagna Al Forno. Pastas come in one-, two- and three- serving sizes. Prices range from $7.95 to $18.95. TANOOR GREEK AND ITALIAN RESTAURANT, 1445 LONSDALE AVENUE, NORTH VAN- COUVER, 986-8182. Table Hopping has thus far only walked by the Tanoor. The one at- tempt by staff to secure a table was unsuccessful: the small Greek restaurant was filled with diners tucking into the restaurant's lunch menu. But Tanoor, «which is in the Jack tonsdale’s belt of mid-Lonsdale entertainment salons, looks pro- mising. The restaurant features a concise selection of simple Greek fast foods that so ably fill the luncheon itl. A full Table Hopping review will follow a full sampling.
