The Powercise system takes working out into the 21st century. New exerc se system is the wave of the future THE WALLS in the gym room on West 16th reverberate with the droning chatter of electronic voices and the focused breathing of people working out. Step into the new Powercise workout room at Gold’s Gym in North Vancouver and you can’t help but feel you’ve stepped through a window to the future. The walls are lined with futuristically-designed exercise machines fitted with alphanumeric keypads, video screens, artificial intelligence and humanoid voices complete with 1,000 word vocabularies. Gym owners Roy and Wade Baumgariner have spent $100,000 plus on setting up the roomful of Powercise exercise stations. The Powercise approach to fitness was pioneered and invented by Rick Dyer, the San Diego engineer who also invented Dragon’s Lair, the world’s first in- teractive video game, and Richard Keelor, a former officer to the President’s Council! On Physical Fitness. The system does away with grav- ity and weights by employing an electromagnetic form of resistance. The resistance creates a ‘‘double positive’? movement, allowing for each exercise station to work two major muscle groups. Said gym owner Roy Baumgart- ner: ‘This is what we really con- sider as fitness for the future. The average person doesn’t get excited about working out. What this does is motivate people. It’s like having a coach with you all of the time. People tend to take the lazy way out and don’t get results and they stop coming. This system does away with that.’’ After a check in with Wally Weight Scale, the talking machines CONCERN FOR THE CONSERVATIVE INVESTOR set the workout pace which is bas- ed on an initial strength test. The machines praise, cajole and scold while the client squeezes out the sweat. business briefcase _ Michael Becker At the end of the line, Peter the talking printer spits out a printout record detailing the performance. The printout includes personal comments from the humanoid coaches. The system is backed by soft- ware (to be upgraded every three or four months) flexible enough to accommodate workout regimens for all purposes. The public can view the machines today at Gold’s Gym in North Vancouver at 901 W. 16th Street, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information call 986-9177. tRkk ee THE DEADLINE to reserve the common shares currently being of- fered by Air Canada is Sept. 15.
