Student off to Singapore

THE NORTH Shore's Pacific Rim
Scholarship winner recently com-
pleted a week of orientation at the
University of British Columbia in
preparation for his year’s academic
study in Singapore.

Calvin Dang was awarded the
scholarship earlier this year along
with nine other B.C. students.

The scholarships, which provide
for up tu $20,000 to each recipient,
were introduced last fall as part of
the provincial government’s $12
million Pacific Rim Initiatives
Program.

Dang, a Grade 12 graduate from
Handsworth Secondary School,
plans to study Mandarin in the
Singapore Regional Training Cen-
tre.

A total of 115 applications for
the scholarships were screened and
submitted to the Ministry of
Education from high schools all
over B.C. A final 25 students were
selected.

urity, commitment, career aspira-
tions and potential contributions
to the province, the country and
the world.

Dang, 18, hopes to become a
teacher. He will report on_ his
Singapore experiences upon his
return next June.
