I's a fact that child safety seats
reduce deaths by 90 per cent, and
crippling injuries by 70 per cent,

There are three types: Infant
Seats — used up to 20 Ibs. (9kes
Convertable Seats — used up to 40
Ibs. (18 kgs.d: Toddler Seats — us-
ed from 20-40 Ibs. (9-18 kg.)

All car seats sold in Canada
must meet Federal Safety Stan-
dards,

In the case of an infant (up to 20
Ibs.} the safety seat must face the
rear of the vehicle. Once the infant
reaches 20 Ibs, until the time he/
she reaches 40 Ibs. they must be in
cither a convertable or toddler seat
and may face forward.

A tether strap should be install-
ed and bolted to the body of the
car when the toddler is facing for-
wards. This type of strap, used in
conjunction with the seat belt,
securely holds the safety seat, and
as a result the toddler, in place.
