Fish, who won the recent B.C. singles champi- onship, said he had not bowled for three years prior to the competi- tion but had read a story in the July 1 News publicizing a fawn bowl- ing championship hosted by the North Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club and had decided to take up the sport again. Accompanying Fish to compete in the national championships will be North Shore bowlers Dave Brown and Bob Scullion. Soviet hockey programme has suf- fered a number of set backs. Over 300 young boys and girls are expected to sign up for the week-long soccer schools, taught by a team of coaches headed by well-known coach Graham Adems. Average weekly enrolment is about 60 to 70 participants, with players coming from municipalities all over the Lower Mainland. “We've got kids coming from the West End,*' said Adams. ‘*We’ve never had that happen be- fore at all."’ At the end of the sessions, youngsters are evaluated for the Premier’s Sports Award badges; chances to win a host of donated prizes keep the action going. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Divers gain wins WEST VANCOUVER'S 16-year- old Megan Gordon recently finish- ed in the top spots at the 1987 Senior Summer National Spr- ingboard and Platform Diving Championships in St. John’s, Nfld. Newfoundland diver Pam Ennis robbed Gordon of the gold medal by .18 points despite the West Vancouver diver’s eight consistent dives off the 10-metre tower to score 471.38 to Ennis’ 471.56. Gordon then took sixth place on the three-metre springboard and finished seventh on the one-metre springboard. Prior to the three competitions, Gordon and her diving teammates had been training for two weeks in Mission Viejo, Calif. Fourteen-year-old Paige Gor- “don, Megan’s younger sister, is on the national diving team, and is presently representing Canada at the World Age Group Diving Champicnships in Hamar, Nor- way. Vancouver’s John Nash came back from Newfoundland with three gold medals after cleaning up in the men’s events. Nash was awarded the top male diver of the meet while Megan Gordon was runner-up to Ennis for the women’s title.
