LOVERS OF the good life
were happy when Ritz-
Carlton opened its first
Hawaiian resort two years
ago. After a decent interval,
so the waiters could practice
catching forks, I checked
the place out.

One look at the location, at the
Big Island's Mauna Lani beach
resort, and there was no doubt
this was the place to go for the
big blow-out, Kevin Costner and
entourage were there, and he
wasn't spending any time filling in
complaint forms.

Now the Ritz-Carlton has done
it again with a new hotel at
Kapalua, Maui, although this time

was hard on the heels of the
nen who laid the carpets,

Ritz-Carlton has a knack for
knowing how to rin a beach
hotel, but delivering service like a
big city operation, This is not
easy: there's nothing worse than a
stuffy hotel when people are try-
ing to relax,

But Ritz-Carlton resists the
temptation to hang signs saying
cover-ups must be worn here, and
footwear there. Lesser hotels do
that, but Ritz-Carlton seems to
understand that its guests kaow
how to behave.

It could be they feel very com-
fortable in a big hotel (550 rooms)
so well designed that it fits snugly
on the beach, Rather than soaring
into the clouds it shelters behind
the palm trees. Not only that but
