prevention section.

The award is sponsored by
7-Eleven stores and was in-
stituted to recognize the ef-
forts of individuals to reduce
crime.

civic officials nominated
Muir for the award.

guides

ON A recent weekend 473
Lions area Girt Guides,
Pathfinders and Rangers and
their adult leaders participated
in a specially-neld camp in the
Heritage Village environment
of the Coast Mountain Out-
door School in Pemberton.

1985 marks the 75th birth-
day for Guiding in Canada
and so the built-in theme for
this Lions Goes u-Celebratiny
camp was living as girls in
1910 would have. The girls
wore the garb of that era
(floppy bows, mid-calf length
skirts, middy collars) and
spent a busy, fun-filled
weekend helping with farm
chores, making their own toys
(no store-bought toys in 1910),
and playing the then socially-
correct games for ladies; cro-
quet, badminton and archery.

The girls enjoyed making
their own ice cream and
washing clothes on a scrub-
board with a hand-wringer.
The girls learned to square
dance, accompanied by the
fiddle, and created a crystal
radio set which actually receiv-
ed the news from the East that
King Edward VII had died.

Panning for gold, Jearning
Morse code, sketching under
“parasols”’, singing the hits of
the day (K-K-K-Katie, etc.),
and marching as Suffragettes
were just a few more of the
opportunities the wirls had to

During the weekend a log

cabin quilt was put together
which was presented to the
first teacher who taught in the
Little Red Schoolhouse at
Pemberton and the camp also
enjoyed hearing legends told
by a native from the Mount
Currie Indian Band, Ralph
Dan, and watching native in-
dian dancing.

When the weekend was over
the girls travelled not only by
ferry, bus and train but also
forward in time to 1985 with
its indoor plumbing and other
modern conveniences.
