undercover boy

A GIRL has to be a guy before she’s taken serious-
ly, reasons teenager Terri Griffith. So it’s off with
the makeup and on with: the jockstrap as
Hollywood offers:‘us a teen-styled Tootsie, out of

drag.

“Just One Of The Guys is, of

course, a comedy, cashing in
on the youth. market. and
throwing a lot of one liners
out at the audience. There’s

nothing new in this film, but

it rates as'a harinless yuk, ©

yuk, chuckle, chuckle flick
with better
script and some serious at-
tempts at acting.

Terri Griffith (Joyce
Hyster) is a poor little rich

than average.

girl with only her voluptuous
body and well-muscled mind
between her and obscurity.
Not content to play the

- airhead in life, Terri wants

more. She wants to become a
serious, investigative, star
reporter. Studying jour-
nalism at Edwina Pearl High
School, she enters a sizzling-
hot piece of news copy in a
contest to land a summer job
on the local daily paper.

RESIDENTS. of. the North
Shore who attend the il-
‘ lustrated lecture ‘*China’’ on
Wednesday, May 8, will be
both enjoying an evening of
information. and entertain-
ment and donating to a
scholarship fund for science
students at Capilano College.

. The. College’s science
department is planning a
series of lectures this year,
the first of which is this slide-
show on China by Dr. Keith
Wade of the Biology Depart-
ment..;A noted ‘Canadian
botanist, Wade was one of a
five-member Canadian
Botanical Delegation which
visited China in 1981.

“In horticultural circles,
China is frequentiy called
‘The Mother of Gardens,’’
said Wade. ‘‘It is the
ancestral home of literally
thousands of ovr most
popular and beautiful garden
trees, shrubs, and herbaceous
plants, which were mostly in-
troduced to the West in the
late 1800's and early 1900's.”

Wade's lecture will not on-
ly concentrate on plants,
though, but will also em-
phasize the scenery, architec-
ture, and human _ interest
aspects of the trip. The Cana-
dian delegation visited the
provinces of Sichuan and

Yunnan, stopping at univer- .

sities, botanical institutions,
botanic gardens, and also ex-
periencing the magnificent
mountain scenery with its
enormous. variety: of wild

The trip’ started with a
week in Beijing. (formerly
Peking), and was followed by
two weeks in Sichuan Pro-

vince, the highlight of which °
was climbing 2800m: Mt. :

Omei. a

- Wade’s lecture will be held
at West Vancouver. Senior
Secondary at 8 pm Wednes-
day, May 8. All. proceeds
from the lecture will-be used
for science scholarships at
Capilano College. Admission
is $3.50. cs

convinced that if she were a
boy, the story would have
made front page. Her answer
is to get a haircut, borrow her
brother's clothes and submit
her lunch story again at
another high school, as a
boy.

Now, while it would take
more than men’s jeans and
jackets to hide this girl’s
curves, Terri is accepted as
one of the guys, although
there is some talk of the new
kid ‘‘being a little tulip.”’

Director Lisa Gottlieb
never misses a chance in this
film to poke fun at both
sexes. .

tend with walking and talking
like a guy, but must also suf-

mined to discover sex while
their parents have left him
and his sister alone for two
weeks. Bud immediately
tepapers his room with
Playboy centerfolds.
Boasting about his sexual
prowness, he comments,
“Pve had lots of sex, except
now I'd like to try it with a
partner.*’

Meanwhile, sister Terri is
finding that being a guy is not
enough. Her story is again re-
jected due to its boring con-

tent. The determined teen
decides to try again, but as an
undercover girl reporting on
a guy’s world.

From lunchroom to Jocker-
room, she follows the guys,
meeting and of course, fall-
ing in love with gentle, quiet,
Rick (Clayton Rohner). So
between adolescent sex, sex-
ual equality and of course, a
love story, you will get some
laughs and a happy ending
out of Just One Of The Guys.
