‘Terra 3’ ... whew!

MY FRIEND, Lyle
Thurston and I had
finally been cleared by
the guard and were
being led by a guide to
the matn set, where an
as-yet-untitled 3-D
color science-fiction
movie was being shot. _

We bent against the wind
as we hurried past cavernous

except for the 120 people
working on the movie, who

had been locked up.on the.

set now for many months.

Security was intense. It
reminded me of NORAD,
where, if you tour a missile
base and you forget to wear
your plastic identification
tag, German sherpherds rip
your lungs out before you
can yelh “Hey, Tm a
reporter!”.

Hurricane fences and
barbed wire and guards and
more guards. And with the
wind blowing. so that dark
plastic sheets covering
broken windows flapped like
bat wings, there was a kind
of Ray Bradbury feeling to
the whole situation, like a
story from The October

Country” a
Weird.
It had been Lyle’s idea for

that while the plot-line of the
movie itself might be thin,
the props were enough to put
Star Wars to shame.

Half the welders on the
Lower Mainland had been
hired to go crazy on a set
four stories high, covering
roughly two acres, depicting
a “junkyard in space’ _or
Something tot ing to that effect. ~

Lyle had assured me that
the results were spectacular

set. He'd been
hired as the doctor in case
anybody got gored dunng
the shooting.

It wasn't exactly that the
producers -- people from
Hollywood - wanted to
avoid publicity, but, like, I
ended up having to wear a
phony 1.D. to get in. There
was a bit of paranoia in the
air, as though somebody was
going to steal the idea.

The rumor tad feaked out

Innocently, I asked our
guide: “In reality, what cs
this place?” (Retrospec-
tvely, I can see that was a
Joe Clark-lke question I
never should have asked.).

“Terra 3," she said,
without hesitation.

“Oh,” I said.
I could tell she'd been

movie too long. The fine
distinctions between

cetinioid hattucination and
normal waking’ con-
sciousness had Started to
blur.

Later, someone else
explained to me that while
“Terra 3” was the name of
the planet where the action
occurs, the vast structure in
which the filming was tak ing
place had originally been the
Dominion Bridge factory,
where they made bridges,
and it was now leased by
B.C. Hydro, who had sub-let
it to the movie-makers.

It was a mindboggle,
stepping inside a robot's sex

By the time we emerged . .

from the old bridge factory
two hours later, my visual
input system was totally
O.D.’d. And I won't try to
describe the set.

Too much. Literally.

When the movie comes
out, in 3-D and color (1
didn't even know they could
do that), it may just prove to
be the most outrageous and
incredible piece of cinema
yet.

Watch for it in a theatre
near you. If I ever find out
the title, I'l) let you know.

But I'll never forget the
planet, Ferra 3- Whew!
