Doesn't it seem a bit ironic that the Canadian Soccer Association is quick to.endorse and sanction a new professional soccer league yet at the same time decide that Canada will boycott the World Youth tournament in the spring because they don’t like the dates? Ever the diplomat, West Van's top soccer player Tony Waiters, said he “‘Welcames the idea of a new Canadian league...if it’s set up on a professional basis.” That's a pretty big ‘if’. At at time when the North American Soccer league is struggling with ailing new pro sport ventures, it is difficult to understand why the CSA were so quick to jump on the bandwagon yet again. “. . A couple of years ago the same CSA sanctioned a new professional league. That league had a tournament involving a few European . by A nd VE raser franchies and the economy in general is not geared to teams then died. This new league which will supposedly operate out of 20 centres across Canada is being represented by none other than J.I. Albrecht, the wheeler dealer who once held the title of GM with the old Toronto Metros-Croatia and Montreal Alouettes. For some reason Albrecht’s name does not create visions of success. The idea of more professional soccer and more opportunities for Canadians is appealing says Waiters, but one wonders who the backers of these 20 teams are and why some of them didn’t bother picking up some of the NASL franchises which were floating around looking for a well-heeled home just a few months ago. , It sounds more like a pipe dream by a few who have grandoise dreams of ‘showing’ the NASL. The CSA would appear to have discovered the secret of the self-destruct button without quite knowing what. iti “Their abysmal lack of foresight when it comes to the advancement of the game, as witnessed by their | do-nothing approach following the World Cup disaster, coupled with their statement .that they will blithely ignore the World Youth Tournament because of a date conflict makes one wonder just how much concern is being given to the people who play the game, from the little kids to the pros. And now they support this league of whimsy. , No wonder it’s difficult for Just before winter sets in is the most im- portant time of the year to have the TOTAL SERVICE experts at Canadian Tire give your car a thorough tune-up and engine analysis.
