bias. Logic? There is a nasty
httle illogical definition of
logic which I must quote for
your edification and amuse-
ment. It goes like this:
“Logic is a reasonable

QUESTION: I can't defend
those frustrating (telephone
answering) machines, for I
am a person and our An-
swering Service deals with
people.

The writer to your column
is misled if he thinks
doctors and our other clients
do not ‘phone their numbers
and then tell us what they
think of our service.
However, mot even our
clients realize what most of
us put up with. (And
naturally, it is not our place
to tell them.) In the process
of recording and dispatching
messages, we, not our
clients, are the ones who

take the hassels from the
callers.

At least five times a shift,
we receive a bang in the ear
just for identifying ourselves
as an answering service, and
this from people who are not
even courteous enough to
say, “Thank you, Vl call
back”. Then there are the
people who rattle off their
name and number so fast we
can't understand them and
get angry when we repeat
after them in order to get
their information correctly.
Then there are people who
call at, say, 5:20, and are put
out to find they have the
answering service, because

the doctor told them to
‘phone at 5.

People seem to think our
sole purpose in being there is
to screw things up for them.
We are trained and we work
very hard. We are very much
victims of the telephone, a
device that is so easy to use,
but people don't seem to
think before picking up the
receiver and dialing. We
have to put up with the
idiocies of our callers and
yet they are not prepared to
accept our human capacity
for making mistakes.
