10 — Sunday, August 8, 1999 — North Shore News Brit Open letter to the B.C, try of Transpurtation and Highways: J have just opened the North Shore News and scen the announcement for the side- walk closures. I phoned the number for the Lions Gate Project office at 437-1500, and found that it was an incorrect number. This isn’t looking very good so far! The figures that have been published estimating. 700 cyclists a day would mean that approximately 70-100 cyclists an hour (during commuter hours) would be inconve- 1G CYC nienced by onc lone pedestrian who chose to walk back and forth during the same period, given that the cyclists are to dis- inount and yield the right of way. Given the recent court rul- ing (January 1999) that it is unsafe for cyclists to dismount on the sidewalk, all of these rid- ers are being placed in an unsafe condition by having to do this. My questions are as follows: What does “cyclist dismount” really mean? What is expected of the cyclist who encounters the “back” of a pedestrian walking in the sarne direction? What message is being north shore news ~ MAIL Box le rules cha given to pedestrians and cyclists when one has to vield to the other? What message is being given to anyone who has ever: remotely considered using their bike to commute, instead of a car? What is the point of having “cyclist dismount” signage on the north end of the cast side- walk? Why is the Lions Gate Bridge the only bridge in the Lower Mainland that threatens non-dismounting cyclists with “prosecution?” My solution, and yes, I have one which is very simple — asks all sidewalk users to “Have courtesy to all sidewalk users and yield to descending, oncoming bike traffic,” so that everyone knows what to do. 1 run, bike, bus and drive the bridge probably daily and on the sidewalk have not yet encountered anyone who isn’t willing to help me get by as safely and conveniently as I am willing to do for them. Looking forward to cooper- ation, decent road shoulders feading to the bridge and more bike company on my com- mute! The answer is BC Ferries. They wait in those horri- ble lineups, leave their cars for a drink, lunch, or just to see the sights, while they wait for the next boat to pull in. Without the ferry termi- nal, no tourists. With no tourists, there would be no business in Horseshoe Bay. How many residents would remain if they could not pop into town for tanch at Troll’s? My message to Horseshoe Bay residents — why not embrace the changes and work with the BC Ferries corporation to help your community grow instead of suggesting they move out and let your.community die. Sean Walker North Vancouver sawalker@mail.icsnet.ca Freedom of expression is not a criminal act — Dear Editor: Human Rights Code and anti-hate laws are nvo terms which nobody could possibly find offensive.
