REACTION TO DOUG COLLINS

‘Racism didn’t die when
concentration camps closed’

Dear Editor:

Doug Collins asks why his denial
of the Holocaust should bother
anyone, if it is as wrong as his crit-
ics insist.

He points out that no one is
bothered ty the ‘‘flat earthers.”’
He tries to equate two absurdities.
But Collins of all people knows
this is false logic.

It is Collins who trumpets the
importance of freedom of speech
and the exchange of ideas. Pre-
sumably he does so because he
believes some ideas are more im-
portant and powerful than others.
Indeed they are. And some lies and
misconceptions are far more
damaging than others.

Denying the vatidity of the
enormous documentation of the
Holocaust, and citing a few self-
important cranks to support your
opinions, is very hurtful — to the
survivors, to the larger communi-
ty, to truth itself.

it is hurtful not only because it
is ugly, but because lies on this
grand scale generate a strong mag-
netic attraction simply by being ut-
tered. Those who utter them at-
tract public attention they other-
wise could not muster; certain
misfits of arrested intellectual or
emotional development find solace
in this kind of cheap notoriety.

That Collins does exactly this is

obvious from his columns: he
quotes Eradley Smith on the
“courage’’ of holding the revi-
sionist viewpoint, and elsewhere he
has told us how the fellows down
at the bar slap his back in con-
gratulations for his strong stand.
He has been reduced to the most
pathetic sort of self-centred jour-
nalism: he is drunk on the least
valuable opinions of others.

The issue, let me be clear, is not
freedom of speech. Collins is free
to believe and say anything he
likes.

should ask is this: what does it
mean that their community news-
paper feels an obligation to spread
Collins’ boastful nonsense? They
would be right to begin to suspect
that the publisher of the News
agrees with Collins. This, for a
community, is not only embarrass-
ing, it’s shameful.

Let’s remember that it was rac-
ism that fuelled the Holocaust, and
racism obviously didn't die when
the concentration camps were
closed.
