Coadturad Centre. dose wid is foriitnies Nat North Shore News Prawns TWO very different plays this week; two excellent produc- tions and two thumbs up — although beth shows would benefit from being shorter. Lawrence & Holloman iy the latest play from Vancouver actor/director/piaywright Morris Panych. His last premier at the Arts Clab, Vigil, will always stay in my mind as the most perfectly slanted view the world Ehave seen since the likes of lonesco and Orton stirred things up in the °60s. While | loved both the humour in 1. & H(t My mother used to say “Take a look around you” Thea she got hit by that bus.) and its bizarre arc, I found the repetitive nature of the scenes ultimately diminished the power of Panych’s punch. The second act is mesmeric and blended with 2 shorter (fewer scenes) first, the play would be devastating. (Plot warning! There isn’t much. Reading this next bit will diminish your enjoyment. You were warned.) Lawrence the optimist meets Holloman who's not --- Pm not sure the label “pessimist” fits. Shallow judgements are made in superficial male style by both. Lawrence patronizes the nerdy litde guy without really listening to a word he says while Holloman schemes to even out the hierarchical assump- tions. On one level he succeeds (remember thar warning), reduc- ing the smugly seif-contident Lawrence to a one-legged, blind paraplegic. But because Lawrence still believes that he is 3 fucky onc- icgged, blind paraplegic, Holloman has not “won.” Richard 7 Zeppieri as Lawrence fares slightly better chan Gary Jones in this production, although both are excellent.
