Wednesday, September 2, 1998 — North Shore News - 9 north shore news MAIL Box Child care options missed Human Resources Development Canada, North Vancouver District and City to Of modesty and morals Dear Editor: Mr. Wright usually writes a good thought- provoking col- umn. The latest of Aug. 23 entitled “Whatever l-appened to pri- daycare and out of school care). These vacy” sure made me pick up my pen to expres. iny approval. I Dear Editor: - of Ambleside anc over the last 1 would like to commend vour news- room for attempting to write positive articles about child care. How would like to point out that the arti particularly “Daycare dilemma 5 working parents” (Aug. 23 News) failed to accurately inform North Shore families about child care options in this commu- nity. It is unfortunate that your reporter did not contact cither the local child care resource and referral program or Community Care Facilities Licensing officers regarding child care regulations in B.C. and, specitically, the North Shore's child care system. Child care is a provincial responsibili- ty. In B.C., anyone caring for more than two children not related to them by biood or marriage is required to have a licence — licensing is the responsibility of the Community Care Facilities Licensing department of the North Shore Health Region. Local licensed child care options consist of Licensed Family Child Care centres (LFCC) and group centres (which may provide a number of different child care programs such as preschool, Install guards at rail crossings Dear Editor: We are long-ti ¢ residents been prevented. As the crossings at 13th, 14th, 15th, two types of care differ in a number of ways, including the number of children in the setting and the required credent! ‘Is of stafé. Another important child care option in this community is the “Licence Nor Required” (1. NR) care provider. The Ministry for Children and Families tunds local child care resource and referral pro- grams to recruit, register and support family homes willing to provide child care to not more than owo children (at one time). This program assures parents that the individuals caring for the hildren have: a criminal record check person residing in the home 12 y of age or older; an annual health and safety monitor of the home; purchased liability insurance; had a TB test; a doctor's let stating they are of good health; current first aid and CPR certificates; regular vis- its from the Support and Outreach pro- gram staff, and, access to equipment and programming resources. On the North Shore, the North Shore Child Care Resource Society i is funded by the Ministry tor Children ‘and Families, 16th, 17th and ous aspects of these intersec- tions in populated Perhaps a check as to the provide the CCRR program and other services related to the development and stabilization of child care spaces on the North Shore. Families looking for child care should call 985-2988. The CCRR program has a detailed database on all licensed and registered child care facilities in this community. It is unfortunate that vour series was not developed in consultation with your community resources. Parents are not on their own when it comes to finding, selecting and monitoring child care — the care of children is a community responsibility, including the media. Concerns abour child care operators that contravene child care regulations should be reported to your locaf licensing officer (983-6700). Anyone wanting to know more about child care should con- tact the North Shore Child Care Resource Society at 985-2988. Let’s-hope no one arcas. two years have seen avo grue- some accidents involving cars and BC Rail trains. While attending the recent Harmony Asts festival at John Lawson Park my young daughter had to witness a hor- 19th on Bellevue Avenue have no guard rails, the obvious happened: a collision between car and train. We demand, as citizens, that West Van Council or BC Rail install railway crossing guards to counter the danger- tesponse time of emergency Personnel to the scene may help the perspective.
