Community . pen doors series MEMBERSHIP has its privileges. For 40 years, North Shore music lovers knew that member- ship to the North Shore Community Concert Association brought access to live classical and contemporary music for the price ofa movic ticket and popcorn. Problem was: performances were for members only, Tickets were hard to come by. There was a long waiting list for would-be subscribers, “With che subscriptions, it was a closed shop,” says George Whyte, the association's new president. -“It was very much a captive audience. No one. else knew about it.” Now all that is changing. The 1999 concert series, held as always at Centennial Theatre, will be open to the pub- lic. Former subscribers will be offered advance sales. Seating will be reserved. The concert lineup, which Whyte says faced criticism in recent years for being “too high-brow,” will be adjusted to reflect changing tastes. The change is in response to a crisis the association found itselfin carlier this year. Subscribers, for Jack of a better word, were dying off. Membership had dropped to 450 from more than 700. There were empty seats at Centennial. Mayor Jack Loucks, founding member Bud Porter and other volunteers on the board were growing tired. The baton was passed. Youthful energy has revitalized the association. Plans for a fundraiser ar Centennial this October are in the works, Stay tuned. eee ARTS BRIEFS concert Barbara Kortmeier has something to sing about.
