Nurses get top honours North Shore residents Dr. Roberta Hewat and Palmira Brouwer have been singled out for their outstanding efforts in the nursing field. The two were recently honoured with Awards of Excellence in Nursing by the Registered Nurses Association of B.C. Brouwer was recognized tor her efforts in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside — one of Canada’s poorest neighbour- hoods. Many of the people Brouwer nurses are not only impoverished, but live with the additional chaltenges of complex medical conditions and psychiatric diagnozes. The caring and respectful stance she adopts when dis- cussing the needs of this extremely challenging popula- tion has made her a role model for many other profes- sionals, states the association. Brouwer also devotes a considerable energy to a num- ber of projects in Brazil and also a strong commitment to assisting refugees and new immigrants. It aims to help those living with mental illness secure rewarding careers outside the unskilled job-marker.
