sald Eagles save NV Outdoor School By Deana Lancaster Contributing Writer deana@nsnews.com THE future of the North Vancouver Outdoor School may be secure, thanks to the Bald Eagles who win- ter there. A conservation covenant has been placed on the property by Narure Conservancy Canada (NCC) as part of a five-year “Eagles of Brackendale project.” “It’s an acknowledged area, continent- wide, asa wintering area for Bald Eagles,” said the B.C. director of the NCC, Kirk Davies. “Ir attracts birds from across the continent. There’s even been one bird radio: cracked trom as far away as Wisconsin.” Davies said because of the high concentra- tion of spawning salmon in the area, “the birds have recognized this is just one fine place to hang out over the winter.” About two-and-a-half years ago the NCC initiated the project, undertaking study to determine whether the area is signifi- cant enough to seck protection from develop WEEK with some of the dogs which ment, tree cutting, mineral exploration, road building and alterations to hydrology. Tr made the grade and the conservaney seta goal of approximately $3 million dollars for habitat protection, further study and a visitor management program. The conse vancy announced on April 15 that Outdoor School will be the first property acquired under the project. Tr will pay the North Vancouver School District $596,000 for the covenant, which will cover the mortgage for the site and leave the school debt-free. As long as the mortgage was stil] outstand- ing, said Davies, there was some concern about the site's future. “School funding has been cut lately, (the school board) is 2a rough situation. There was some concern that the board, or a future board, would be so pressed for funding they might sell (Outdoor School) off,” he said. “The NCC is raising funds in the private sec- tor to protect the cagles’ habitat. To date, the Forest Alliance of B.C. has donated $2 million, and Forest Renewal B.C. has also given “major dollars” to the project. The remainder is still to be raised. 10 am. to 12) p.m. on LAUNCH: The North Shore chapter of the RNABC is spon- soring, a Nursing Showcase on Saturday, May 10 from 9:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the North Mall of Park Royal Shopping Centre in West Vancouver.
