By Andrew McCredie Sports Editor And in the process of earning a berth on the women’s 4X400m__ relay team, West Vancouver Otter swimmer Andrea Moody set a new B.C. record in the 50- metre freestyle at the recent Maritime Life Olympic Trials in Montreal. The 18- year-old’s time of :26.46 dethroned Anita Lee’s previ- ous record mark of :26.53, and was good for a third- place finish at the Olympic Trials. In addition. Moody fin- Swimmer qualifies for Atlanta ished third in the 100-metre freestyle, just one-hundredth of a second slower than the 18-year-old Canadian record. Ryan Laurin’s Olympic dream, however, wasn't real- ized in Montreal. The North Vancouver swimmer quali- fied for the final heat in the men's 50-metre freestyle, but finished seventh and out of qualifying contention. Laurin, also a member of the West Vancouver Otters, still has three more opportu- nities at international compe- titions to meet the standard required to make — the Canadian men's team. Other highlights for the Otters included a lifetime best (:52.70) in the 100-metre freestyle for Conor Braiden. He qualified for the consola- tion final and posted the time to finish in 14th spot. And Sarah Mathews’ comeback continues as she posted three season-bests at the Olympic Trials. Over 150 swimmers from Canadian swim clubs partici- pated in the six-day event at Montreal's Olympic pool.
