Rarified WV airs Dear Editor: I read with great admiration the letter by Drew A. Meikle in the Jan. 24 News under the title “Leave W. Van board alone.” I could not agree more with this excellent man’s thesis, and saw at once what it must be to receive the succor of a West Vancouver education. As a confirmed North Vancouverite, however, I now realize that my upbringing is lacking in those subtleties nec- essary to cross over the river into the rarefied atmosphere of the truly distinct society. Indeed, one need look no fur- ther than the pages of the News to see how West Vancouverites excel over their more humble brethren, in so many aspects of human endeavor. Of late, its lawyers, stock promoters, entrepreneurs, retired husbands, and parents- in-law have had much to teach their North Vancouver counter- parts. As for West Vancouver's school system, where else could youngsters gain the hands-on experience of practicing in a play to take what is only right- fully theirs? I often reflect on how broad-minded so many West Vancouverites must be, to have taken so closely to heart the unfashionable philosophy that all property is theft. So please, Your Grace, stay on your side of the Capilano River, and don't let your chil- dren piay with ours. Oh yes, and _| thank you for such good fun. ” ‘David Boddington oe North Vancouver, | pdbod @cyberstore.ca Rail ways weighed Dear Editor: Lam glad that BC Rail’s man- ager of public affairs, Barrie Wall, has responded to the letters from Lorraine Fisher and me regarding tail service to Squamish and Whistler. The issue needs a thor- ough public airing so that a wise decision may be reached on it. Mr. Wail and the proponents of rail service are at Jeast on common ground in believing that rail is far more environmentally friendly than road transport, for both goods and passenger traffic. Where we differ is on the via- bility of the rail service. It's a sorry fact that Canada's railways have, over recent years, for the most part systematically down- graded the quality of passenger service. This downgrading has been partly responsible for the discon- tinuance of cross-country rail trav- el and to the diminution of travel on the trains between North Vancouver and Squamish and Whistler. Anyone who has travelled on European railways recently knows how comfortable and rapid a form of transport it is. The matter of costs is more complex. The central issue is the costs to the environment and to the taxpayer of constructing and main- taining a new highway to Whistler as opposed to upgrading and subsi- dizing a railway. It is not sufficient to say, as Mr. Wall does, that the costs of rail construction and subsidy would be prohibitive and leave it at that. Engineers, environmentalists and accountants need to sit down and factor in all the components before the question can be answered.
