Turbo Talon gets claws
into highway cruising

The manual five-speed shifter is
greatly improved. Though still cable-
operated, throws are shorter and
nore precise — read “enjoyable.”
The previous manual shifter was
nothing less than sloppy. An optional
four-speed automatic is available
with an overdrive lockout feature on
the shift lever.

While other manufacturers have
abandoned turbo-charging and all-
wheel-drive on compact sporty
coupes, Eagle stuck with it on the
TSi AWD. The all-wheel-drive sys-
tem continues to use a viscous limit-
ed-slip centre differential to distrib-
ute power evenly to the front and
tear axtes. An optional rear limited-
slip differential is available to furtter
improve poor-weather traction.

Due to its excellent traction, the
TSi AWD is one of the safest all-
weather performance cars on the
road today.

However, there are some practi-
cal drawbacks to all-wheel-drive.
The Talon TSi AWD weighs 184
kilograms (405 tbs.) snore than the
front-wheei-drive ESi and fuel con-
sumption is about 106% more.

in addition, the rear differential
takes up trunk space. The FWD
Talon has 470 titres (16.6 cu. ft.) of
trunk space whereas the AWD Talon
offers only 382 litres (13.5 cu ft.).

The Tulon’s new interior offers a
stylish, wrap-around, user-friendly
approach to controls and instru-
ments. The previous model's unusu-
al angled dashboard has been
replaced by a sweeping arc
dash/console with large dials and
buttons closer to the driver's reach.
Outward visibility is good for a low-
slung coupe, but the rear spoiler
interferes with rear vision when
backing up.

Standard equipment on the TSi
AWD includes a premium audio sys-
tem with radio/cussette, graphic
equalizer and eight speakers, three-
way power driver's seat. power
door-locks, power windows (with a
30-second reserve after the ignition
is turned off), tilt wheel, two con-
sole-mounted cupholders, split fold-
ing rear seats and an automatically
sliding passenger seat to make rear
entry easier. Dual airbags and side-
door beams are also standard equip-
ment.

One complaint: the shift lever
obscures the stereo channel display
in certain shift positions.

The trunk, accessed by a rather
heavy hatchback. is shallow, and has
a very high liftover height.

The 1995 Talon ESi now starts at
$19,425, 11% more than last year’s
ES model. The 1995 TSi AWD
starts at $28,360, a 17% increase
over the 1994 manufacturer's sug-
gested retail price.
