THE NORTH Vancouver
Chamber of Commerce has em-
barked on the Adopt-an-Athilete
program to sponsor the four
North Vancouver athletes training
for the national team for the 1994
Commonwealth Games.

It will cost $1.5 million to send
the Canadian team to the games
next summer in Victoria and
chambers of commerce across
Canada have set a goal to raise
the entire amount through the
Adopt-an-Athlete program.

Canadian decathlete Michael
Smith, a gold medalist at the 1990
games, will be the national
spokesman for the campaign.

North Vancouver Com-
monwealth team member Char-
maine Crooks thanked the
chamber on behalf of the four
athletes who are now training to
qualify in their events for the na-
tional team.

Chamber manager Judi
Ainsworth said the chamber is

committed to adopting all of the
athletes from the community. The
four are track-and-field ‘athlete
Crooks, cyclist Atison Sydor, lawn
bowler Dave Brown and’ syn-
chronized swimmer Janice Bren-
ner. : os
The chamber hopes * to raise
$1,994 to offset the cost of food, *
travel and housing for each of the :
athletes. The first fundraising -
event will be a silent auction at‘a’
