A24 - Wednesday, December 3, 1980 - North Shore News amok - GAINESVILLE, Fla, (UPI) - An experimental robot ran amok at a University of Florida laboratory, destroy- ing itself before a graduate student could press 4 cutoff button, the university reported Wednesday. “We had a _ hardware failure,” graduate student Harvey Lipkin said. “We believe the automatic - control system went haywire, burned out a com- ponent and the arm was driven with force into its supporting stand. It ripped the shoulder off.” Lipkin, who was the only person in the UF Centre for Intelligent Machines and Robotics lab at the time of the incident last weekend, said the robotic arm destroyed itself before he could hit the “kill” switch on the control desk. “If someone had been standing there they could have been hurt badly,” the mechanical engineering su- dent said. He said he was standing at the desk well out of reach of the metal arm. “Before we put the manipulator up and running again we are going to install a safety system - first, to keep it from hitting the stand and, second, to have it so that, if it even touches a per- son, it will shut off automatically,” Lipkin said. For the past two years, scientists at the UF laboratories have been developing robots for in- dustrial use, such as main- taining nuclear reactors. Since the incident occur- red, Lipkin has been busy trying to reassemble the robotic arm with new parts from the university's mechanical shops. “This 1s a problem com- mon to manipulators,” he said. “An obstacle avoidance problem or collision pro- biem or collision problem It is something large corpora tions) are very much itn- terested in ” Alberta still dry EDMONTON (UPC) Hav ing already suffered through sudsless summer.
