in an unusual manner. Our hearts
sank as each quietly thought of
the three other boats that had lost
rudders and had required rescue
efforts.

In response, the main sail was
dropped as we attempted to slow
the vessel down. We discovered
that our propeller had become
tangled with an old barnacle-
laden fishing rope.

The removal of this was
facilitated by the courage of fan
and Rene as they swam under the
ship’s stern as it rolled and crash-

ed about in the sea’s eight-foot
white-tipped swells.

Halfway through the operation,
Godfrey thought he saw a shark.
That moment saw the fastest as-
cent from ocean to ship ever
witnessed.

All of this action can be verified

by Wayne who was
cameraman throughout.

The frightening shark turned
out to be a friendly mahi mahi,
and the operation continued.

Then there were the injuries,
luckily none too serious, which
were promptly addressed by Jules,
who was acting as the ship’s doc-
tor.

With the pressures of wind and
sea, there were a number of other
minor snaps and breaks in the
ship’s rigging. This led Greg in a
recourse of the quote: ‘‘There was
never a ship entirely ready for the
sea.*’

Perhaps each of the obstacles
faced by the crew will in the long
run be remembered as highlights.
Each, like the voyage itself, was a
triumph over challenge.

All worked together to achieve
a goal that could not have been
accomplished alone.

Technology is looking for
full-time BCIT students to
play inter-collegiate soccer
this fall.

The Burnaby-based school
fields both men’s and women’s
teams which compete in the B.C.
College Athletic Association

League.
The league includes teams from

Capilano College, Vancouver
Community College, Fraser Valley
College, Trinity Western College,
Caribou College, Malaspina Col-
lege, Okanagan College, Royal
Roads College and Douglas Col-
lege.

Pre-season
mid-August.
