THE GERTRUDE Lawson
House, a heritage house in West
Vancouver (located across the
street from the municipal hall), is
soon to see its official re-opening
as the home for the West Van-
couver museum and archives.

Built in 1940 by Gertrude
Lawson, the daughter of John
Lawson, an early pioneering fig-
ure in West Vancouver, this house
was also planned and mortgaged
by her.

Gertrude Lawson was the first
woman in B.C. to obtain a mor-
tgage. She lived in this house for
48 years and was a teacher for
many years in the community at
Pauline Johnson school.

Both Gertrude and her father
had been impressed by the stone

castles in Scotland and therefore
decided that stone would be the
main building material used.

Some of the stone is said to
have come from New Zealand as
ship’s ballast, but a great deal of
it is believed to have come from
the bed of the Capilano River.

Inside the original stone
fireplace remains intact with its fir
mantlepiece and restored hard-
wood floors in the large, airy liv-
ing room.

Leaded glass doors lead off the
main room, and a raised platform
is located off the southeast corner
of this room.

This was designed to accommo-
date small orchestras that accom-
panied performances of the

Lawson was particularly fond
of Scottish dancing-

The Gertrude Lawson House
was purchased by the Municipality
of West Vancouver for $1.2 mail-
lion, and another $500,000 was
required for renovations inside
and out, and for landscaping and
architectural fees.

In memory of Gertrude
Lawson, the Lawson family gen-
erously donated $100,000 towards
some of these renovations.

The West Vancouver Museum
and Historical Society has also
been instrumental in the preserva-
tion and restoration of this build-
ing.

The adaptive re-use of this
heritage home as a museum will
undouotedly be an asset to the
West Vancouver District .
