NORTH SHORE INFORMA- TION AND VOLUNTEER CENTRE, 1060 Roosevelt Cres., North Vancouver, 985-7138, rep- resents a number of retired resi- dents who volunteer their time to help with legal, financial and other problems seniors encounter. It acts as a sort of clearing-house for volunteers amongst us who may have skills tying fallow. NORTH SHORE COUNSELL- ING CENTRE, 2104 Gordon Ave., West Vancouver, 926-5495, offers professional counselling on a sliding fee scale, which means fees are based according to the counsellee’s income. This service includes pastoral counselling. SENIOR CITIZEN COUNSELLORS, for both North and West Vancouver, are available by telephone to give assistance with all sorts of government forms, including simple income tax returns. Their main thrust is to put you in touch with the best possible agent to help you, and are appointed by the provincial government especially for the concerns of senior citizens. LONG TERM CARE: This is where you call, 986-7111, if you DON'T WAIT TO READ IT wish Meals on Wheels, a home- maker's help, adult day care or respite for a care-giver. It doesn’t require a doctor, anyone may call for an assessment. It's a tremen- dously important agency for those who want to live at home as long as possible but who need help with cookery and cleaning. NORTH SHORE CARE- GIVERS SOCIETY: 983-2141, ex- isting to provide short-term relief for those in charge of the ailing. They now have a branch in West Vancouver as well as the original. KEEPING ABREAST: This last section lists those groups who don’t fit any above category, like KEEP WELL, which is a regular feature of the week in both Silver Harbour and West Van Seniors’ Centre as well as North Shore Neighbourhood House. They promote ongoing good habits and regular surveillance of sensible health practices. Then there’s the SALVATION ARMY’S Over Sixty Club, which meets twice a month to share a bag lunch. Perhaps you don’t know about the DOWNTOWN EDUCATION CENTRE, 549. Howe St., 681- 4636, which provides exhaustive information on post-secondary education in B.C. They can tell you about courses offered, about fees reduced or waived, about student loans and what precisely is offered. It’s free. CAPILANO COLLEGE will charge registration fees but will give your credit courses free. They have wheelchair access and a Speaker’s Bureau for your club, and all sorts of extension pro- grams at reduced rates. Call 984- 4901. LUCAS CENTRE takes 50 per cent off most of their courses when seniors apply, except for word processing and welding, and they have a.remarkable range of recreational and serious courses to offer. Apart from all of the above, which in retrospect covers a big territory, there’s the CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, which, in North Vancouver (call 987-4488) offers assistance and in West Vancouver (call 926-6614) invites you to participate in seniors’ con- cerns.
