By Surj Rattan News Reporter Actually, the West Vancouver resident is still making toys. One of his better known pieces was Expo 86°; UFO H20O water- park amusement attraction, which proved so popular with chifdren during the world’s fair. Gilbert recently completed building a playground on top of the Children’s Hospital in Van- couver. The playground consists of 12 different amusement pieces. And the structures, which Gilbert describes as ‘‘user friend- ly,’’ consist of everything from a porcupine to a ‘‘whale water table.”’ All of the structures are design- ed to provide amusement for the youngsters who are staying at Children’s Hospital. When children first enter the rooftop playground, they are greeted by the “bird airplane,’* which is wheelchair accessible. Like most of Gilbert's playground structures, the ‘bird airplane’’ is injured. In this case, the airplane has a cast on one of its feet. “That helps the children feel a bit more comfortable,’’ says Gilbert. The porcupine has a bandage on its nose, and the ele- phant structure is sitting in a wheelchair. “My efforts have been bent toward creating an environment that is basically designed for the younger groups, bui which would be a delight for those of many ages,"’ says Gilbert. ‘‘Populated largely by rather unusual, un- Disney-like characters, this would not be a physical playground but more a playground for the mind that will be able to transport even those unfortunate kids with a minimum of energy or mobility into a special world. “A world that only. as patients, they are privileged to experience. “A place where they might even look forward to if they have to return again and again for treat- ment.”* While Expo’s UFO 4H20 sculpture is probably Gilbert's best known work, his favorite is the Leonardo Thank-You Machine which was on display in the Van- couver Art Gallery. Gilbert has worked in a variety of jobs and locations, but they have all been associated with art. A former advertising agency art director, he worked on Disneyland’s Tomorrowland _ be- fore going back into advertising. Twenty years later he left to work on his own. Gilbert says he cannot explain how he gets his ideas for his sculptures. “It just comes to me...it’s the creative thought process.”’ Gilbert says he would like to make molds of his sculptures and market them on a larger scale. And while Gilbert is one year away from the time when most people retire, it is safe to say that he will always remain a kid at heart.
